How and where do I get my ATA Carnet stamped in the UK?

Whether you are travelling via air, land or sea, you must always get your ATA Carnet stamped by customs when exiting and re-entering the UK.

It is crucial that you do not forget to get your Carnet stamped when you return to the UK. Proof that you have re-entered the country is vital when it comes to combatting foreign customs claims, so even if you forget to get your Carnet stamped on the way out of the UK, you must remember to get it stamped on the way back in.

Here are 5 tips and tricks to help you get your Carnet correctly stamped in the UK:

1. When re-entering the UK via the airport, make sure you declare your goods at the red channel once you land.

2. Certain airports require you to get in contact with customs in advance by calling the following phone numbers:

  • Birmingham: 07823 532768 or 07802 290092

  • Edinburgh: 0131 322 5283 (select ‘option 12’)

  • Luton: 01582 817900

3. If you are exiting or entering the UK via the Eurostar, you will also need to notify Border Force in advance by calling +44 (0) 20 7841 6410.

4. If you are travelling via Dover, Euroshuttle or Holyhead, you will need to get your Carnet stamped at an Inland Border Facility (IBF). You can speed up the process by downloading the IBF app to pre-notify Border Force that you are coming.

5. If you are driving your goods to the EU in a personal vehicle or van, you must get your Carnet stamped at an IBF (Stop 24 is now only open to registered operators, so you will need to report to Sevington).
