In the last year, Business West has been working hard to move from its previous shareholder model to being owned by its members. We were able to fully transition to this member-owned model in 2023, and one of our first actions was to schedule an AGM to start a direct dialogue with our new shareholders,  the members of the Business West network of regional chambers of commerce. The meeting, held at historic cultural venue Watershed in Bristol, was marked by insightful discussions, reflections on past achievements, and a forward-looking vision for the future.

First up to speak was Colin Skellett, the chair of Business West, who underscored the fundamental purpose of Business West and its evolution over the years. He delved into the organisation's rich history, tracing its roots back to its founding in 1823. From its humble beginnings Business West has burgeoned into one of the largest chamber networks in the country.

Colin emphasised that the essence of Business West lies in its members, highlighting, "you, who are members, own this organisation."

He reiterated Business West's commitment to sustainability across economic, environmental, and social spheres. He highlighted specifically the importance of the public and private sector partnering to deliver much-needed change and development in the city – such as Cabot Circus shopping centre, one of the biggest projects of its kind in the South West. He noted the challenges that the region faces, for example transport and the need for that to be addressed either underground or continuing overground. Colin also acknowledged the move from the mayoral to a committee system in Bristol, emphasising the need for strong leadership and advocacy on the regional and national stage.

Up next was our MD, Phil Smith. Phil provided a comprehensive overview of Business West's current work and past achievements, showcasing initiatives like Swindon Futures aimed at revitalising the area around Swindon’s railway station and driving economic growth for the region. He emphasised Business West's role as a catalyst for positive change, serving as a conduit for SMEs to thrive and innovate. Phil highlighted various opportunities we had created for members to engage and collaborate, from high-profile events featuring leaders like Keir Starmer to initiatives like Hydrogen South West.

Phil also announced that Business West has begun to work on formation of the Futures West Foundation for Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Growth. The Foundation brings business leaders, academics and policy makers together to tackle long-term regional challenges to raise productivity, growth and innovation. Finally, Phil talked through several of our ongoing initiatives, like OurCity2030 and the Growing Together Alliance. The alliance, in particular, aims to harness regional strengths to bolster the national economy.

We will be rotating our AGM locations through all of our regions, and at each AGM we will be inviting a leader in the local chamber. For this year's AGM, the President of Bristol Chamber of Commerce, Dr Justin Morris, delved into the vibrant Bristol scene, acknowledging his key contributors inside Business West and out, outlining his role in amplifying members' voices. He emphasised the importance of engagement and representation and introduced the attendees to the new the Bristol Advisory Committee.

We ended our meeting with a Q&A session that saw attendees engaging with Business West representatives on a range of topics. From apprenticeships and national-level advocacy to international trade and infrastructure development, the discussions underscored the multifaceted challenges and opportunities facing the region.

As Business West charts its course forward, the AGM served as a rallying point for collective action. The emphasis on sustainability, innovation, and collaboration reflects a concerted effort to steer the region towards a brighter, more prosperous future.
